Guide Camp

>>  Monday, May 30, 2011

This was taken as the sun was coming up and I was above the mist in the valley.

It is very close to where I live in a beautiful Guiding camp site. The person that donated the land gave an immeasurable gift to so many generations of woman and the people that strive to keep it such a wonderful place now work very hard indeed.

Many of you know I regularly take Brownies to here but this week I am camping with the Guides.

Camping is not normally my thing but I am hoping the hard sleeping mat will be offset by these sorts of moments.

With a bit of this thrown in for good measure!
Wish Me Luck (oh and a bucket full of patience)!

A Monk Swimming

>>  Sunday, May 29, 2011

A friend's little boy said tonight over dinner "God must be very tiny"
"why"  asked Friend
"because you can't see him "

This reminded me of the time my daughter came home and said "I saw God this morning"  It  took me a while to get to the bottom of it, she'd seen the vicar at school!

I  read once about a little girl who asked her grandma if god had a second name, gran said she didn't know, her little brother said, "of course he does, it's Zilla"

But children do get very confused about things we take for granted.  Lots of children think God is called Harold. Why? "Our Father who art in heaven Harold be thy name"

I know for many years I felt sorry for Round John Virgin.  I thought it was cruel that John Virgin's weight was brought up every Christmas.  It's true.

How many are fooled by A Monk Swimming*
Have a think about it.

But my favourite is "God's name was Peter"
‎"Thanks Peter God"

Let's not forget the ultimate Queen of confusion:

*Hail Mary, full of grace, blessed at thou amongst women

The Curse of the Working Mum

>>  Friday, May 27, 2011

I have a flighty brain, my thoughts tend to jump all over the place at the best of times, after all I am a counter clockwiser.
But I am convinced that I will never be the best in the field at my job (Database Administrator - DBA), or even the best on my team and I blame being a working mum.

Another DBAess I work with has no child like distractions:

DBAess:          "You see the script saves the last line number as a cint, once you hit
                       32768  lines it stops"
Me out loud:   "ok, do you want me to revisit it or do you want to do it"
inside :     "bugger, bugger, bugger, didn't spot the cint"

DBAess :        "the next problem is that the overflow hung for 72 hours...."
Me inside:      "Shit, PE day tomorrow forgot to switch washing machine on,
I'll never get it dry overn..."
DBAess:         "so you need to revisit the schedule..."
Me inside       "I hate the windows scheduler, where's cron when you need it"
DBAess:          "....the output needs to be..."
Me inside         "15:25, she should call to let me know she's home,
why hasn't she rung yet.  I suppose it's a bit early"
DBAess:          "...OK?"
Me outloud:     "Absolutely, leave it with me"

And she can leave it with me and I will fix it but I still seem to have a constant child distraction even without child present.  DBAess remembers the dictionary views (it's a DBA thing) because she doesn't have to remember a school timetable, PE days, homework diary, yet another school letter to return.  My brain is full and then I have to squeeze work into it as well.  My little book of views sits unattended on the breakfast table, waiting for the quiet moment.

Strangely it was easier when daughter was younger, it seems that the older she gets the more complicated her life becomes and the more it complicates mine.  Don't get me wrong, I don't mind.  Above everything I am a Mum.  If I had nothing else in the world I would still be happy.  But adding 'Working' to Mum adds a complication to my career that only another Working Mum would understand.

I may be wrong but I don't think Dads have the same issues.  The ones that I work with all have wives (both WMs and SAHMs) to do the child thinking for them.  Maybe single-parent Dads with primary responsibility would understand but on the whole I think it is a Working Mum issue.

I want to be the best at my job, I really enjoy it and I am good at what I do but there always seems to be a child related reason to me having to leave the office before 6pm or not work all weekend or even just concentrate 100%.

I blame the women of the 70's who convinced the world we could 'have it all'.

I can't.

This is pretty funny though:

Oi, Balloonist. Not in my backyard!

This weeks Gallery is my Backyard

It looked beautiful as it came towards the house.
Lower and closer

And closer

We waved, they waved back, they were close enough to see clearly

And then they were gone.

As exciting as it was I have to say I prefer this view in my back yard

Iceland : A Necessity?

>>  Monday, May 23, 2011

WARNING: Please note this post is completely free of facts and truth and is based on a misguided and biased opinion i.e. mine

So another of Iceland's volcanoes is erupting.  I remember reading a tongue in cheek comment somewhere on FamilyMatters (which is a must read) suggesting that Iceland should be invaded and the recent eruption has me pondering whether Iceland's existence at all is entirely necessary.

Reasons:

1) The Cod Wars : I mean fancy a nation expecting exclusivity of it's own waters when we have to stock chippies on a Friday night

2) Volcanoes : The more advanced European nations seem to have silenced their volcanoes and generally put large works of art on anything high enough. Allowing dust belching of this nature seems remarkably selfish in this day and age.

(Nb one of these has nothing to do with a volcano and one isn't in Europe - go figure - can I blame that on Iceland too?!)

3) It is a nation based on Viking genes ...ahem...not wishing to mention anything similar around the rest of Europe

4) The Icelandic Government seem to think that the best way to deal with owing 4 Billion euros to the British and Dutch is to ask the Icelandic people if they would like to pay it back themselves.

I was wondering, being as the ecosystem (and more importantly our few opportunities for a sunny hol) are likely to be shot to pieces yet again by their volcano, whether it would be too much trouble for our gun-ho friends across the pond to do what they do best and remove the nation from the landscape. No silly messing around with land army and gentle toys - a simple obliteration will suffice.

That way we can have no worries about being able to fly.  We can sunbake abroad whilst moaning about the bloody foreigners, the complete lack of HP sauce and generally being the bane of our fellow European's lives. I mean just imagine Budapest or Prague without all the British drunks vomiting in the streets (see what I mean?!)....perhaps we could offer some amazingly cheap stag and hen deals in Reykjavik just before removing it.

There is one small worry I have : Is Noggin from those parts and are we prepared to lose such a fellow?

As Guiders we were looking what we had done so far this year:

"I went to New Zealand with a group of Guiders" said an older Guider
"I took a group of Guides to Italy" said another

The rest of us went a bit quiet really, after all I had simply been to my Brownie nights (and not all of those!).

"A 14 year old in my Ranger unit rang up a restaurant and booked a table for us all" piped up someone.

Now that is a great achievement we all agreed!

And so is this.  One of our County units and our County Commissioner made it into Hello magazine. (You'll have to click on it to see them on the right)

Guiding is relevant to today's girls. Thanks to the leaders who made it happen, one unit of Guides had an unforgettable experience with the best views of the Royal Wedding.

Facing The End

>>  Thursday, May 19, 2011

When I was my daughter's age there were my parents, aunts and uncles.  People I looked up to.  They were the ageless people that worked, were parents, knew stuff.  They were just there.

My grandparents and their friends were the old people, the old generation.

I lost my father 20 years ago. My grandparents too.  I have now started to notice those ageless aunts and uncles are becoming old people.  That generation.

So I, in turn, have become one of them, as I saw them.

I feel that I am becoming the carer (who will still care for me).  I have a responsibility as a mother and as a daughter and niece.  Stuck in the middle with a weight to carry.

I see my wrinkled eyes in the rear view mirror and know that very soon, too soon, that I will become like them.

'The cancer has spread to his lungs, kidneys, liver, neck'

Yes, it will have done, that's what it does in our family. It is in our genes. No one escapes it.

No one.

This weeks Gallery is Mustachioed, well what is a kitty for if not sticking fake mustaches to.

Don't feel too sorry for her..this week she has been delivered home by the Church group, has been announced on Facebook as visiting Rainbows, Karate, Playgroup and Hula and the messages finally made their way via 'likes' to me.  She brought home half a pigeon and followed daughter to the school bus to have to be brought home again.  The cry  "Oh Maisie" regularly goes up in this house.

Would you sleep with a married man?

>>  Sunday, May 15, 2011

A little while ago I told you all my friends were getting divorced, well the trend continues.

2 more friend's husbands have gone off with other women.

Where all things at home are 'normal', I believe that the philandering man takes the responsibility, of course, they had a duty to their wives and how can you possibly work on your marriage if there are 3 in it (to quote a famous line).

But I am increasingly finding myself angry with the 'other' woman involved.  Many years ago I thought I loved a man, we saw each other a lot, I wasn't really 'involved' in his life much at all and I found out why when a wedding picture turned up.  In the time he was seeing me he was in the process of getting married.  I was mortified and angry.  I was the other woman.  I wanted to go tell her, say 'hey look what type of man this is'.  But I did nothing, except never saw him again.

But if the women knows a man is married, surely she should say no to the man. I once had a friend at work, who was going through a difficult time,  ask me to sleep with him.  I told him to go home to his wife and pass 'that feeling' on. We remained great friends.

I work with 2 men who once had a very heated discussion at work.
One said every man will cheat on their wives if they have a guarantee of not being caught out.
The other said he would never cheat on his wife in any circumstance.
I like that man and his principles.

If someone believes it's time to leave a marriage, which is what you do when you have an affair, then surely the spouse deserves the respect of being told that, before they go off looking for another.

If a married man approaches a women, shouldn't she say "go home and discuss it with your wife first".  Doesn't she have a level of moral responsibility too?

I think I'll leave you with another thought about marriage:

If you have to stop at traffic lights whilst driving to the shops, do you think "must get a new car".  No, of course not.  I see my marriage as that car.  It has to stop at traffic lights.  Occasionally it has to go into the garage but you don't think about trading it in every time...actually, I've just had a look at my car and I might be talking myself out of that analogy fairly swiftly

...look, just work on your marriage ok, it deserves it!

Smarties and Cream

"Mum can I have those smarties after tea"
"on one condition"

"you share them"

She burst into fits of laughter "I thought you were going to say I had to have a piece of fruit first"

"Some days my love you just gotta go with the chocolate, let's get the squirty cream out too"

Now that did taste nice!

Guiding Recharge

>>  Monday, May 09, 2011

I've been and had my Guiding batteries recharged. I go into the garage once a year for this purpose.

We leaders go together, we train, we share ideas, we network, we have an inordinate amount of fun and as there are no under 18s, we also have the opportunity to have an inordinate amount of alcohol too!

Each year I go, a little jaded and wondering how long I can carry on doing this Guiding malarkey.  Do I really want to turn up again and again to support children that aren't mine, often with demanding parents that think it is 'a right', do I really want to keep on giving up my time, energy and often money for this?

Each year I come back thoroughly charged, reminded of exactly why I want to do it, how much fun it is and what an incredible bunch of women all 100,000 of us adult leaders are.

We give girls and young women a voice.  We give them wings and they fly.  And I get the biggest buzz there is watching them take off.

I wouldn't want to be anywhere else

>>  Saturday, May 07, 2011

This is where I live.  We stopped for a quick poddle after popping out for some hamster food. (I'm not buying cat food in the hope they eat the damned hamster!)

I consider myself to be rather lucky that not many people seem to want to be here.

I really have no idea why.

I think it is good for the soul.

The trout were basking, huge things.  The ducklings were swimming in little teams.  Robins raced around us, cheekily close, swooping around and making us laugh out loud.  The swans were on their nests.  Moorhens were moving silently along.

Perfect way to spend half an hour before tea.
In fact I may be gone for longer than 30 mins.

Don't pay the ferryman

Something has been bothering me...

RTFM muted the possibility that the Inland Revenue may (or may not be) compared to the Grammer Nazis when it comes to ensuring they don't make life easy for us.

This left me pondering about the nice (I'm guessing there are some) people that work there.

Think about their payslip... They get paid then immediately have to give the money straight back. When I see the frightening amount of tax I pay it makes me sigh but if I was paying it straight back to employer that would for sure be worse.

Imagine: "here's your banking bonus now give it us back" GARRR.
So for the workers at the coal face I have this juxtaposition of pity and hate. Hate's an awfully strong word isn't it but then so is Nazi.

At least I know my tax won't be wasted by this government on health care or libraries or education. After all the Big Society can cover that, my taxes are paying for hotel search missions in Libya and the largest security operation mounted in a generation. Phew!

Whilst wandering around the web tonight I stumbled on this. Interesting concept:

So Bin Laden is dead....

Which one is your money on for going next:

Canary Wharf

Eiffel Tower

Golden Gate Bridge

Sydney Harbour

Don't suppose there's any chance of them removing Hull, Burton or even rearranging the Cathorpe Interchange?  But it's not even close to a laughing matter is it.

“Faced with the death of a man, a Christian never rejoices, but reflects on the serious responsibility of each and every one of us before God and before man, and hopes and commits himself so that no event be an opportunity for further growth of hatred, but for peace.”

I came across this diagram today.  What would be your definition of the Core?

Love? Peace? Humility?

Somehow 'bombing the shit out of each other' doesn't seem to fit into that piece of the puzzle.  Please let it stop before more innocents die.
