Silence is not Neutral

Silence is not neutral.

I mentioned how family friends had not made the effort to be inclusive for Cog at a very difficult time.  Their stance was that she was on the Whatsapp invite the same as everyone else and it wasn't their problem if she hadn't seen it.  I've been pondering this stance about life.

"It's not my problem"
"It's not for me to get involved"
"It's not my place to say anything"

Seems fair enough, seems like we've behaved like reasoned, balanced, logical people.  We are above that stuff.

No.

Silence is not neutral it makes a huge sound.
"In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends." - Martin Luther King
We need to stand up and be counted, we need to reach out and offer support.  Are we afraid that doing that will cost us time we can't afford or drag us into something we are afraid of being a part of?  But so often support is just a few words of  "I see your pain", it doesn't have to be a huge commitment.  Just an acknowledgement of the injustice.

Integrity, the choice between what's convenient and what's right. - Tony Dungy
