The Doorway to Porn

>>  Thursday, July 04, 2013

The BBC ran a story recently about how much Internet porn is estimated to be currently out there and whether the hits are as high as those sites claim.

I think it's pretty obvious that as just about everything in our lives starts to move into 'the cloud' the actual percentage of 'the internet' that is porn will be decreasing.

The problem currently being discussed is the effect that early desensitisation to pornography is having on children.  That young boys exposed to it now will be more likely to treat women like objects and expect sex to be a constant fetish fest.....or at least I think that's what I heard the (s)experts say.

My point is that there is nothing new under the sun, it's just it's a lot easier to get to it these days.  There's no point in taking a sneaky peek at the underwear pages in your mum's Gratton catalogue when you only need type 'sex pictures' in Google images on your phone and 81,000 images blows your download allowance, amongst other things, for the month.

But there's the issue, why is it so damned easy to get to.  I typed 'pretty' into google images and it was only a couple of pages before the first soft porn pictures come up and not many more for images I would rather not see.  It's not very hard to filter them out but people, on the whole, are pretty stupid when it come to IT.  'People' should not have to filter. If you want to see it and that's ok by me then opt in. Simples.

The search engines are an open doorway to the porn sites, close it.  There could be a single engine like findyourpornhere.com yes, I know, the url has probably already been taken with a simple age question to go to the results.  It's not censorship, if a young boy wants to see it, fine he can lie about his age.  That's cool.  I'm not for removing access to it, I am for removing it from our constant vision, taking it out of normality and putting it back into a corner where there needs to be an acknowledgement that you want to open the door.

We don't expect children to shut their eyes when they walk past a sex shop window, nope, the window display should not display although these days it does seem to display more and more.  The internet is no different.

But this isn't an Internet issue really is it, this is a social issue gone mad.  I got very annoyed in a shop in Portsmouth, I was looking for a magazine and a suitable comic for my then 10 year old COG. An impressionable age.  Exactly in our eye line was Zoo, Nuts, FHM, and being as I was then aware of what I was looking at, I glanced up at Escort and all the other plethora of 'big and bouncy'.  I explained to the shop owner that I did not want to have to filter my own way through porn to get to a copy of bloody Woman's Own and a Just Jackie.    I was of course looked at like I was an irrational, hormonal women that had gone off the rails and my rant got me precisely nowhere other than laughed at.

I walked out of the shop to find myself looking at billboard after billboard of essentially sexual objectification of women.  I even opened a technical magazine at work to be faced with it.  The problem is, it doesn't really bother me that much.  It's an annoyance, it shouldn't be that way, but on the whole it doesn't bother me and that is a huge problem.  It doesn't bother most other people either.  The sexual objectification of women is totally acceptable in our society now. That is the problem.

A whole page of quick wank porn from google for a teenage boy will not affect his psyche the way the steady drip of magazine pictures at the supermarket checkout, bill board, TV ad, young girls clothes that sexualise them from a young age like the playboy range for children so stupidly sold by Asda or even a rabbit selling a chocolate bar.

I think it's time to take back our streets and force the ISPs and major search engine providers to start the online clean up by simply shutting not locking a few doors..
